Rap-A-Lot Records Founder J Prince defines The Art & Science of Respect (@jprincerespect @popolitickin)

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with the one and only J Prince.

For decades, serial entrepreneur James Prince presided over Rap-A-Lot Records, one of the first and most successful independent rap labels. In his memoir, he explains how he earned his reputation as one of the most respected men in Hip Hop. By staying true to his three principles of heart, loyalty, and commitment, and an unwavering faith in God, he has defeated many adversaries. Whether battling the systemic cycle of poverty, record label executives, boxing promoters, or corrupt DEA agents, Prince has always emerged victorious. Respect isn’t given, it’s earned. In recounting his compelling life story, Prince analyzes the art and science of earning respect – and giving respect – and how to apply these principles to your own life.

M. Tana (@emTANA) – Julio & Felix (Video) [via @GlobalMusic_Grp]

Born Antonio Davall, “M. Tana” was born and raised in the Northeast Quadrant of Washington, D.C. He grew up in the Trinidad neighborhood where his mother Tina Davall worked as a Nursing Assistant working 40+ hours a week, and sometimes double shifts on weekends. As a young teen he began writing lyrics and freestyling with friends in ciphers to occupy his time. Transitioning from backyard battles. M.Tana began to pursue his career as a rapper.

In 2014 M. Tana released two projects titled, “The M.LP” and “Right Back” that included production from DJ Boom. Quickly learning his way around the D.C. mixtape circuit, M.Tana knew he had to continue to develop his unpredictable flow and lyrical ability to stand out in the DMV (D.C, Maryland, Virginia) markets. Seizing every opportunity, M. Tana made the decision to appear on Global Music Groups “New Artists Auditions” in April 2015. Using his skills and precise execution, M. Tana blew away the judges, and was handpicked as the winner by music legend, (Super Producer) Chucky Thompson. Feeding off his momentum M. Tana released his projects “CITY” & “CITY 2” in 2016, where he shows his true identity, street challenges of growing up, and struggles of trying to break through as a real artist. To his surprise the feedback was tremendous for his singles, “Mis Guided Youngins, Get That Money, Hard, and Identity Check” which appealed to a wide audience on Datpiff and YouTube. As word spread and M.Tana showcased his ability at local DJ Showcases he began to have sit downs at DMV Life, DTLR Radio, and 93.9 KWYS.

In 2018, M. Tana plans to solidify his position and label Global Music Group by releasing his debut EP “The New Tana” on October 17th 2018. He wants to engage followers all around the globe with music that will create an emotional connection as well as, put him in a position that conveys a message- “The road to success is always under construction.” The official singles of the debut EP are “Julio & Felix” and “Knocked Off”.

PoPolitickin (@PoPolitickin) Artist Spotlight feat. Polly A (@akaPollyA)

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we politick with singer/songwriter Polly A.

You could say Polly A possesses more than one musical personality. The Milwaukee-bred and Harlem-based songstress zig-zags between R&B, reggae, alternative, and hip-hop with equal parts grace and gusto on her debut EP, Ghetto Gold Dream [222 Records/Interscope].

“When I sing, I approach the vocals like a soul singer,” she says. “When I write, I approach the lyrics like a rapper. When I’m thinking about music, I collaborate with others who draw from a large sonic palette. I spend a lot of time with my songs, and I really live with them. These are my words and thoughts.”

Growing up to the sounds of Bob Marley and Yellowman on mom’s stereo, Polly A—aka Meleni Smith—discovered her voice in a third grade music class. She’d spend high school performing in local productions and even with the Florentine Opera Company. Moving to New York City, the budding artist enrolled in Columbia University and began seriously recording (and hustling).
