Davon King – Not For Sale 2 (@DavonKing_ @NocoBeats)

Breaking into the industry seems to happen overnight, often (and increasingly so) it is down to a single, short-lived auto-tuned song made for the club. Thankfully there are still plenty of artists that are carrying on the art of hiphop, both in the mainstream with the likes of J Cole, Kendrick and Cordae, however there are dozens of underground artists waiting to break through.

One of these is New York rapper Davon King. Born and raised in Long Island, his music has a distinct east coast flavor, which is a nice surprise amidst the southern twangs of the radio. ‘Not For Sale Pt 2’ is a 5 song EP produced by Northern Irish producer Noco and features a melodic and soulful array of beats, overlaid with a mutitude of stories and ear-pleasing flows. The first track is a piano driven, drum-less intro followed by a sprinking of 808s and boom bap. The final track’s instrumental reminds the listener of a psychedelic rock track from the 70s, with an apt finisher in ‘100mph.

Rhea Sun (@rheasun16) – “Leaving”

Singer-songwriter Rhea Sun releases her 2nd single “Leaving” today, available on all digital platforms through MackLife Records.

The Portuguese, UK-based artist, who has a contemporary approach to writing, delivers a Dancehall-tinged R&B single, produced by Mark Morrison and Shaun Bailey, with lyrics that explore walking away from a complicated relationship. A Roger Russell directed music video will release later this month.

After being signed by Mark Morrison to his MackLife imprint in early 2020, influenced by artists such as Ari Lennox and Mahalia, Rhea Sun’s unique voice was introduced to the world in April 2020, with the release of her debut single “Train”. The single premiered on Jazz FM, where it became John Osborne’s Track of the Week, has amassed over 100,000 streams on Spotify alone, and reached the Top-20 on the official UK Soul Charts.
